An Interview With Chris Rogers: Trainee Water Transfer Technician

Amid a constant frenzy of activity on the factory floor we managed to catch our trainee water transfer technician on his tea break to grill him about life in our hectic dipping area, his favourite project so far at Wicked Coatings and why he thinks Lewis Hamilton will be bringing home the F1 title for Britain this year!

NAME: Chris Rogers

AGE: A sprightly 33!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT WICKED COATINGS?

This month will be my 2 year anniversary. It’s been emotional…

DO YOU HAVE A TYPICAL DAY?

A typical day no – but everyday holds new challenges, with the different types of products that come through the busy dipping area.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I get satisfaction from transforming a dull, boring everyday generic item into something that has a ‘WOW’ factor and looks completely different and exciting when it leaves us for the customer.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PROJECT?

Approximately 12 months ago we had a project to dip some aeroplane components (private plane interiors).  I had to drive to Bournemouth Airport to meet the plane on the runway, unload the components, race back to the factory and produce some exciting designs! We opted for Black Burled Wood for the entire interior including panels and trims. We were working to a three day turnaround so this turned out to be a high adrenaline job which certainly motivated the team to complete the job to a very high standard.

HAVE YOU EVER HAD ANYTHING CUSTOMISED YOURSELF?

Yes, I have had a number of items customised including my phone case, play station controller,  Jet Ski and pit bike which is an ongoing project. WHAT CAR DO YOU DRIVE?  A Vivaro Van that is my work tool and useful for transporting the Pit Bike and Jet Ski.

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM MOTOR?

Mitsibishi Evo 6 would be a bit girly but never the less great! A  WR450F Yamaha would blow my mind.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORT?

Formula 1 – no contest!

GO ON THEN – WHO WILL WIN THE WORLD TITLE THIS YEAR?

Lewis is the man, he just needs a bit of luck to go his way, he is definitely the best driver in the world at the moment hence another great win last week!

OK, so we admit that our Website and social feeds are often awash with imagery of engines, exhausts and wheels – but there is so much more to our coatings prowess than just cars and bikes!

We have customised an enormous range of components over the years from guns to games consoles and for those of you with an eye for design, we are especially keen to shout about the wonderful results that we can achieve in the domestic world.

Who doesn’t get sick of the sight of the same kettle, toaster or drab cabinets in their kitchen… Wouldn’t you love to transform mundane household items into something funky and cool? Our water transfer printing and custom painting services are perfect for revamping your home with a variety of finishes – from snakeskin bins to textured doors, we will make it possible for you to experiment with colour, texture and a variety of different finishes so that you never look at your light switches in the same way again!

We can use a wide range of metal coating effects to produce multiple design possibilities around the home – you wouldn’t believe how many items can be transformed into exciting and expensive looking pieces. THE BIKE: Triumph Street Rocket
THE PROCESS: Carbon dipping and custom spray painting
THE TIME: Two Weeks
THE PRICE: Approx £2,000

The Triumph Street Rocket. WHAT. A. BIKE. Classic lines, awesome torque and an undeniably menacing presence on the road!

When we heard that we would be working on this project the team was pretty excited to say the least. Little did we know that the finished result of this project would go on to win numerous shows for best paint and best engineering this year..

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words and so we have decided to illustrate this project in a series of images.

The photos start at the beginning of the project and take us through the following stages:

  • Preparation
  • Priming
  • Base coat application
  • Masked for dip
  • Dipped/dipping
  • Masked for 2nd stage dipping
  • Dipping
  • Set up for laquer

Moving on to the finishing stages…

  • Circuit board design stripe running through the centre of the bike
  • Finished in a custom mixed kandy green lacquer.
  • Bordering the centre stripe are specra flare pin stripes.
  • Then the edges of the tank and panels are finished in gloss carbon fibre
  • With the TRIUMPH and STREET ROCKET logos showing through the carbon in the green circuit board finish.

Finally, the custom belly pan and mudguard are finished in Kandy green honey comb effect.

Exhausting, frustrating at times, but worth every last paint stroke because the finished result is STILL winning awards and will be on show at the Southern Motor show on the 15th, 16th and 17th August.

If you need an excuse to come and join us then tell the Mrs that there will also be food and gift stands, a funfair and “the one and only” MC STALLION will be playing late into the night!! You cannot afford to miss this event so come and see this incredible bike at The Showground, Five Heads Road, Horndean in Hampshire, Po8 9NZ!

In the meantime, feast your eyes on the transformation of this brutal machine!!!!

This month we managed to corner our newest Paint Preparation and Polishing Technician for a ten minute chat before he whizzed off again into the depths of the factory..

NAME:

Manuel Angel Pieris Casado – known to friends as “Angel”!

AGE:

Just hit the big 40 with a painful bump!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED FOR WICKED COATINGS?

I’m a relative newbie – been here for just over 2 months. A bit anxious about this “initiation test night” that I keep hearing about though…

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY INVOLVE?:

A great deal of polishing!! Its really addictive work to be honest and I get a crazy amount of satisfaction from doing a thorough job. Always best to treat each piece as if it was your own and then you find you give 100% each time! Also satisfying to know that a good job at this stage will really contribute to the final look of each piece!

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE PROJECT?

Not been here quite long enough to have one but from what the other guys talk about I think the KTM Super Duke wheels that were done recently were pretty spectacular! Sounds like a pretty intense paint job but the final result looked incredible!

WHAT CAR/BIKE DO YOU DRIVE:

Travel by train at the moment but I quite fancy one of those driver-less cars I keep hearing about..

HAVE YOU EVER HAD SOME CUSTOMISATION WORK DONE YOURSELF?

IMG_6956

I have had my mobile phone case dipped which was pretty cool. My next project is to get some work done for my catamaran. Watch this space for pictures!!

WHAT IS YOUR “DIY TIP OF THE MONTH”?

Well that one is pretty simple – if you want a perfect finish then its all about preparation, preparation and more preparation!! Its seriously worth putting the effort in here guys or the rest of the project will be built on shaky ground.

There is nothing like warm weather, roaring engines and the delicious waft of fish, chips and beer to draw even the most reclusive bike enthusiast from their workshop… Poole Bike Night never fails to disappoint on any of these promises.

As thousands of like minded people joined together to share their common passion, the Wicked Coatings team was delighted to be on the Quay Side with a number of visual treats for the crowd!

Having discovered that a Kawasaki that was custom painted by us had been awarded “Bike of the Night” from the previous week, we were in top spirits and keen to share more of our work…

The most popular exhibit proved to be a Triumph Street Rocket that had undergone an extensive dip and paint customisation. We are exceptionally proud of this bike and have captured its transformation in a series of photographs.

We received some incredible feedback as this formidable bike attracted a huge amount of attention on the Quay side. It will also be on show at the Southern Motor Show on 15th, 16th and 17th August 2014 so be sure to pay the Wicked stand a visit if you missed us at Poole Bike Night.

Also on show was a special Suzuki Hayabusa and a variety of other products to demonstrate the versatility of our water transfer printing service.

We had several hundred visitors to the Wicked Coatings stand and spent a lot of time with potential customers to explain the Hydrographics process and the beauty of what it can achieve, especially when coupled with custom painting…

All in all, it was a fantastic night – many thanks to those who took the time to visit us and give such positive feedback about our services. It’s always great to meet our customers and hear about the projects that you have completed and those you are planning for the future!

Absolute agreement within the team that this job resulted in “the best wheels we have ever customised.”

Put a great bike together with a brief with a twist – and we were in hydrographics heaven! The custom paintwork was pretty painstaking work – learn more about what was involved here.

Ultimately we ended up with some very special wheels that are half orange and half carbon fibre with carbon writing. We also carbon dipped the rear hugger, front mudguard and tank trim to match!

We are proud to say that each one of our staff is unique in terms of expertise, experience and above all else, passion for the highest level of customisation.

To be employed at Wicked Coatings, our guys are put through a rigorous interview process which ensures that only those at the top of their game will join our tight knit crew. “The Best Wheels We Have Ever Done!”

Each month brings a new set of challenges to our team on the factory floor – from super cars to games consoles, the customisation that is required can vary tremendously.  That’s why we love Hydrographics – no day is ever the same and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

July has certainly been no exception to this rule as we were faced with a particularly intense and time consuming dip and paint project.

A customer came to us with an interesting brief. Having seen a variety of our previous work on wheels he believed that Wicked Coatings was the specialist company he needed to fulfill his own vision.

The brief: To use a combination of carbon dipping and custom painting to mimic the KTM Super Duke prototype wheels but with a special twist.

We spent some time discussing the project across email to ensure that our suggested approach would fall in line with the customers high expectations. With a strategy in place – we headed for the factory floor to begin work…

After carbon dipping various components for the bike we set to work on the wheels.  To ensure a perfect result, it was absolutely critical that the job was carried out slowly and methodically.  In order to keep in line with the specific brief, we needed to painted the KTM Super Duke wheels half orange and half carbon.

As time consuming projects go, this was undoubtedly one of the toughest – but ultimately it was worth every painstaking minute as the finished look was nothing short of spectacular!

Shortly after the job was finished we were discussing the results and a unanimous decision was made at Wicked HQ – these were ‘the best wheels that we have ever done at Wicked Coatings. Period!”

Hi Lyle,

I received the fascia kit back on Friday and I just wanted to express my gratitude to you and your team for the absolutely superb job that you’ve done on them.

It freshens up the interior exactly as I wanted it to and the quality of the work is truly outstanding, I will most definitely be recommending Wicked Coatings to everyone I know.

I’m just glad that I saw your company and the Hydrographic process on Wheeler Dealers otherwise the fascia would have been having stretchy vinyl wrapped around it, water transfer printing in my opinion looks by far the more professional solution.

Once again many thanks Lyle!

Very Best Regards

Steve Coffey

We love nothing more than a customisation project that transforms a bike from rags to riches!

Stripped of its original body work – we set to work on some serious dip and paint spraying. We carbon dipped the front and side panels and finished the job with a super gloss finish.  Here you can see the fantastic results!

Very cool carbon dipping project which has resulted in an awesome look for this Mazerati. We carbon dipped various parts of the engine bay and completed the job in a gloss finish.

Following some essential surgery to my leg I unfortunately was left with some nerve damage and subsequent foot drop. This meant that I had to be fitted with a special brace which would support my foot and allow me to walk.
Although the brace ordered was carbon fibre, when it arrived I was disappointed to see that it was navy in colour and not at all ‘cool’ looking!! Not great when I have to wear it every day for the rest of my days!!

Having watched a programme on TV that featured the services of Wicked Coatings I contacted them to see if they could ‘pimp’ my brace and make it at least look a little like the traditional image we all think of when we imagine carbon fibre (shiny and sleek).

The service that I received was simply amazing. From my very first contact with the team, they couldn’t have done more for me. When I explained that my brace was essential to my walking they made me feel like I was a priority and my brace was transformed in just a couple of days.
When it arrived and my wife and I unwrapped it, we couldn’t believe it was the same brace! It looks amazing and now makes me feel much more at ease with having to wear it everyday because it’s so much cooler!!!

I can’t thank you all enough.

Regards

Dean Whiting
